FOCUS - CORNUS  C. kousa
Cornus, dogwoods, comprise a group of 30 - 50 species of mostly deciduous woody plants
growing as shrubs and trees; some are herbaceous perennial plants and a few of the woody
speices are evergreen. They are in the family of Cornaceae.
The tree varieties are flowering, most are fruiting with good fall color and can be a good
landscape tree. Cornus alternifolia, Pagoda Dogwood, is native to eastern North America
and found along the marins of forests or under and by the borders of trees and swamps;
in moist, well-drained soil. The tree is regarded as attractive because of its wide spreading
shelved branches and flat-topped head, creamy spring flower clusters and red fall foliage.
15 - 20' tall and wide. Sun to part shade.
C.a. 'Golden Shadows': variegation of gold around the edge and reaching 15' x 10'. C.a. 'Argentea': leaves edged in white to creamy white flowers with horizontal branching to 15'.
Cornus controversa, Giant Dogwood, is a native to Asia with dark green leaves with silver
green beneath turning red in fall. Abundant creamy white flower clusters. Full sun for
best bloom. Moist soil. 40 - 60' tall and wide.
C.c. 'June Snow': large flat topped, wide-spreading habit. 30-40'.
Cornus florida, Flowering Dogwood, is a species of dogwood native to eastern North
America. It is a small deciduous tree growing to 30' tall and often wider. Typically
flowering in late April or early May in northern and high altitude areas.
C.f. 'Cherokee Princess': unusually heavy display of white blooms, 15 - 20' tall and wide. C.f. 'Cherokee Sunset': vigorous growing with deep pink flowers. 20' tall and wide.
Cornus kousa, Kousa Dogwood or Japanese Flowering Dogwood, is a small deciduous
tree native to eastern Asia. C. kousa is extremely showy when in flower, late spring/
early summer - weeks after is leafs out. It has a relatively upright habit. Fruit is pink to
red and edible, a delicious addition to the tree's ornamental value. It is resistant to
anthracnose disease. C.k. 'Akatzuki' variegated leaves flush with pink, white with pink flowers 15' x 10'. C.k. var. chinensis: large white bracts in June. Red purple fall color with open habit. Larger leaves and bracts than the species. C.k. 'Milky Way': creamy white variegation with creamy white flowers and mottled bark. To 20'. C.k. 'Samzan': also known as 'Samaritan' with creamy white leaf variegation and cream white flowers. Pink and maroon fall color. To 20'. C.k. 'Summer Fun': large white flowers with green leaves edged in pink. To 10' tall. C.k. 'Wolf Eyes': gray green leaves with white margins. Pinkish red fall color. 6' tall and wide.
Cornus mas, Cornelian Cherry, is a species of dogwwod native to southern Europe and
southwest Asia. It is a medium to large deciduous shrub or small tree. The flowers are small,
with four yellow petals, produced in clusters in the late winter, well before the leaves appear
making it one of the earliest to bloom. an ideal ornamental for late winter interest. The fruit is
edible and best described as a mixture of cranberry and sour cherryt. 20-25' x 10-20'.
C.m. 'Variegata': small yellow flowers in late winter/early spring. Yellow variegation on the outside of the leaf.
Hybrids offer the benefits of both parents.
C.k. x nuttallii 'Venus': 6" creamy white blooms with red and purple fall color. Rounded habit to 25'. C. x 'Rutgan', Stellar Pink: blooms mid spring with pink and cream flowers. Brilliant fall color. To 20' x 25' C. x 'Rutban', Aurora: velvet white flowers mid-spring. To. 20' x 15'.
